Polynucleotides vs Profhilo: What’s the Difference?

If you’ve been researching injectable skin treatments, you’ve likely come across both Profhilo and Polynucleotides. They’re two of the most popular biostimulatory treatments in aesthetic medicine right now, and it’s easy to see why clients often ask me to compare them. Both are injectable. Both improve skin quality. And both work without altering the natural structure of your face.

But they work in fundamentally different ways, and the right choice comes down to understanding your own skin. In this guide, I’m breaking down exactly what each treatment does, who it suits best and when combining the two might be worth considering.

What Is Profhilo?

Profhilo is a pure hyaluronic acid (HA) injectable, but it’s unlike anything else in the HA family. Introduced in Europe in 2015 and developed in Italy, it uses a unique thermal process that binds high and low molecular weight hyaluronic acid chains together without chemical stabilising agents. That’s what makes it so gentle on the skin.

When injected, Profhilo spreads across the skin’s dermis layer, deeply hydrating the tissue and stimulating fibroblast cells to produce collagen and elastin. It’s often described as a “bio-remodelling” treatment rather than a filler because it doesn’t add volume or change your facial contours. Instead, it works to fundamentally improve the quality and tone of your skin from within.

The results show up as improved skin elasticity, better hydration, smoother texture and a natural glow. It’s particularly well suited to those noticing skin laxity or early signs of volume loss, typically from the age of 30 onwards.

Polynucleotides vs Profhilo

What Are Polynucleotides?

Polynucleotides (often referred to as PDRN or PN) are derived from DNA fragments of fish, most commonly salmon. This technology is backed by decades of research in wound healing and regenerative medicine, so while the source might sound surprising, the science is well established.

Where Profhilo works primarily through hydration and collagen stimulation, Polynucleotides work at a cellular level. They actively support the skin’s own healing and regeneration processes, and their strong anti-inflammatory properties help to calm the skin, reduce redness and even out tone.

This makes Polynucleotides particularly effective for skin concerns that go beyond general laxity. They’re a treatment I reach for when clients present with acne scarring, rosacea, hyperpigmentation or generalised dullness. They’re also one of my preferred options for improving the appearance of the delicate skin around the eyes, often delivering excellent results in an area where dermal filler can carry greater risk.

Polynucleotides can also be applied to the scalp, where they support hair growth by improving blood circulation and strengthening hair follicles over time.

Polynucleotides vs Profhilo: The Key Differences

The simplest way to think about it: Profhilo is a hydration and bio-remodelling treatment. Polynucleotides are a regenerative and healing treatment. Both stimulate collagen and elastin. Both improve overall skin quality. But their ideal candidates and the concerns they address differ meaningfully.

Profhilo uses hyaluronic acid as its active ingredient and works primarily through deep hydration and bio-remodelling. It requires 2 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart, takes around 30 minutes per visit and results typically last up to 6 months. It can be used across the face, neck, chest, hands, arms and knees, making it one of the most versatile skin quality treatments available.

Polynucleotides use DNA fragments (PDRN/PN) and work through skin regeneration and cellular healing. They require 3 to 4 sessions spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart, take 30 to 60 minutes per visit and results also last up to 6 months. Treatment areas include the face, neck, the delicate skin around the eyes and the scalp.

The most meaningful difference between the two is what they target. Profhilo is best suited to skin laxity, loss of firmness and overall dehydration. Polynucleotides are better suited to specific concerns such as scarring, rosacea, pigmentation and hair loss.

Who Is Profhilo Best For?

Profhilo is likely the right choice for you if:

  • You’re noticing skin laxity or a loss of firmness, particularly around the face and neck
  • Your skin feels dry, dehydrated or has lost its natural glow
  • You want an all-over improvement in skin quality with minimal treatment sessions
  • You’re in your mid-30s or beyond and noticing the early signs of ageing
  • You want a treatment that covers larger areas, including the neck, chest or hands

Who Are Polynucleotides Best For?

Polynucleotides are likely the right choice for you if:

  • You have specific skin concerns such as acne scarring, rosacea or hyperpigmentation
  • You want to improve the appearance of the under-eye area without the risks associated with dermal filler
  • Your skin is sensitive or reactive and would benefit from an anti-inflammatory approach
  • You’re looking for targeted skin regeneration rather than general hydration
  • You want to support hair regrowth and improve scalp health
Polynucleotides vs Profhilo

Can You Have Both Treatments?

In short, yes. And for many clients, combining Profhilo with Polynucleotides delivers results that neither treatment could achieve alone.

Profhilo addresses overall skin quality and hydration across the face and body, while Polynucleotides target specific concerns with precision. Together, they create a comprehensive approach to skin health that works at every level: deep structural support from the Profhilo alongside the targeted regenerative work of the Polynucleotides.

That said, the right protocol always depends on your individual skin, your goals and your timeline. This is something I assess carefully during every consultation, so we can put together a treatment plan that genuinely makes sense for you.
